Position Overview:

We are seeking a Technical Assistant to work in the Station Design Department. Under the limited supervision of the HVDC Switchyard Design Technical Officer or delegate perform moderately complex/analytical assigned work group duties. Participate in the preparation of project scope and estimates; prepare complex drawings, bills of material, memos, purchase requisitions and stock transport orders associated with the design of new or modification of existing stations. Lead and direct design and drafting of modifications to substations consisting of Structure and Equipment design requirements with minimal relaying or control. May provide final drawing checks prior to approval.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the coordination of all aspects of assigned projects with other departments, business units, or consultants, regarding engineering, budget, and project schedules.
  • Prepare and issue station layout, switchyard electrical, and grounding drawings including bills of materials along with requisitioning materials.
  • Review and finalize drawing pakcages developed by consultants and contractors in accordance with established procedures.
  • Maintain current working knowledge of apparatus, material, and industry practices related to project requirements.
  • Apply technical electrical design fundamentals during the design process and contribute to the development of new design processes and substation design standards.
  • Under limited supervision, requests material status from external suppliers and exchanges design and operations related information with engineering consultants.
  • Meet with manufacturers' representatives, consultants, contractors and personnel from other sections and departments as required to satisfy design requirements. May discuss general design details with engineering consultants and suppliers.
  • Provide guidance, instruction and checking of design and drafting practices of other personnel. Assist in the training and development of junior personnel.
  • Liaise with other design sections, departments and Construction and Commissioning staff, as required, to ensure designs meet current standards, end user functionality and to provide limited troubleshooting when required.
  • Field check drawings or carry out inspections of stations to obtain project related information.
  • Participate and act as a role model to team members in adhering to corporate values.

 

Qualifications:

  • Two-year diploma in Electrical or Electronics Technology from a recognized institution, plus a minimum of two years of related experience in power system analysis or operation;
  • OR
  • Grade 12 and completion of a long-term electrical apprenticeship resulting in an Electrical Journeyperson Certificate, plus at least two years of directly related experience beyond the apprenticeship;
  • OR
  • Grade 12 and a one-year certificate in a related discipline, including technical courses (approved by Station Design Department) at the Technologist level in AC/DC electrical circuit theory and/or electronics, plus a minimum of three years of directly related experience.
  • Basic knowledge of AC/DC electrical/electronic fundamentals.
  • Working knowledge of station design to include site layout, structures, equipment, grounding, control buildings, AC/DC auxiliary services, schematics and cabling diagrams.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of major apparatus and its application and interfacing with other design parameters.
  • Sound knowledge in design, construction and maintenance of substation facilities is an asset.
  • Demonstrated capability to use both manual and computer assisted drafting (AutoCad) systems, and thorough knowledge of applicable drafting techniques and standards.
  • Working knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code, electrical safety, working clearances, and electrical technology used in Station Design.
  • Working knowledge and application of SAP Material Management and Project System Management modules.
  • Proven interpersonal skills and ability to provide guidance to junior staff.

 

Salary Range

Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The range for the classification is $31.94-$44.18 Hourly, $61,202.96-$84,652.88 Annually.
